Why does the UK invest in the wrong technologies to combat climate change?

The UK invests in the some technologies that will combat climate change but also technologies which extends the use of or makes fossil fuels essential. Saudi Arabia influences policy through the UK “Net Zero Policy’ and the UK has just committed £22 billion towards funding of technologies that do not eliminate fossil fuels.

There are three documents that together ensure that UK research is strictly controlled.
UK Net Zero Research and Innovation Framework (Updated 30 March 2023)
UK Net Zero Policy (Updated May 2024).

Many technologies such as heat pumps, carbon capture, and carbon storage, blue and green hydrogen, all get funding, despite, the fact that all of these very expensive solutions are not solutions that will bring early end to fossil fuel extraction.

UK funding is only approved if it complies with the detailed requirements set out by the government chief scientific adviser who not only provides detailed advice on scientific issues at the highest levels of government, it also issues strict guidelines as to what can qualify for funding throughout the entire UK funding structure.

Is it any wonder that technologies which would significantly reduce the need for oil and gas are actively obstructed by the “catapults”.

Within the guidelines it states R&D can fund projects that:-
“Reduce costs of heat pump manufacture; reduce disruption from installation and use; develop innovative business models to drive uptake; demonstrate in range of homes and at neighbourhood/district scale (Development TRLs 4-6 & Demonstration TRLs 6-9)

The only effective way to approach a government department is to do so via your local MP (I have asked for a surgery appointment with Alison Mcdonald).

Having looked at comments on Marlec’s web pages it appears that many of their customers are dissatisfied that the Iboost only heats the top portion of the cylinder using the immersion heater and Marlec does not appear to have a solution for this (it is a shame they don’t sell your Energy Storage Device as they would then have far happier customers).
